This film asks, “Who Says Saving the World Can’t Be a Blast?”

After a wildfire nearly turns his family (and goats) into refugees on their remote New Mexico ranch, former suburbanite Doug Fine sets out to discover food security around the world via hemp and other crops.

Host Fine Fine follows three farming families for a year as they attempt to grow a healthy crop and business while fighting climate change. Who says saving the world can't be a blast?

There's one thing that every human being on this planet shares: the need for a habitable planet. Suburbanite-turned-hemp-farmer-and-goat-herder Doug Fine learns from the world’s oldest hemp farmer and them teaches newlyweds how to become a digital age farmer.

In between, he travels from Native American tribal lands to George Washington’s Mount Vernon and back home to his Funky Butte Ranch in New Mexico, sharing his hard-won regenerative hemp farming expertise with his family and the world.

After a bear fleeing a massive wildfire killed his goats and put his family in danger, Fine says, "I'm telling these stories because the well-being of your family and mine might depend on it.”

This wild, funny film is about food security, family wellness and having fun along the way. In fact, Fine says, “becoming a regenerative farmer or supporting them in your community is the most fun you can have outside the bedroom.”

Doug Fine at SXSW, in Austin Texas: Build Soil or Die

For the third year in a row, you voted for Doug Fine’s session at the renowned SXSW Festival in Austin, TX. This year Doug’s topic is: “Grow Soil or Die: How All Earth’s Farming Can Go Regenerative.”

Mar 9, 2024
10:00am – 11:00am CT JW Mariott
https://schedule.sxsw.com/2024/events/PP137464

And Doug’s Austin book signing time (for AMERICAN HEMP FARMER and HEMP BOUND: will be Monday March 11, 12:15 PM - Location: SXSW Bookstore, Austin Convention Center, Room 10C.

See ya in Austin!

Thanks so much to everyone who voted for it and helped make it happen! In the talk, Doug offers a three-step plan by which any of us can be a part of stabilizing extreme climate while growing superfood. As readers of Doug;’s book AMERICAN HEMP FARMER will know, he’s attempting a regenerative life in part because a bear, fleeing another —ho hum— millennial wildfire, attacked and killed most of his goats one June morning. The bliss of such a life, Doug writes, is a pleasant side-effect. His job is building soil, raising a family, writing books, making television, giving rollicking talks and having a good time along the way. His online hemp course (which can be taken from anywhere at your own pace), his books and event booking contact are at https://DougFine.com  See y’all in Austin in March at the incomparable SXSW.

Doug Fine Live at SXSW

Doug Fine will be presenting his keynote titled, “What Anyone Can Do to Stabilize Climate-Plant Hemp” at the Climate Change Track of SXSW in Austin, Texas on March 16, 2022 at 2:30 p.m. (Hilton Salon F).

We’re all excited that that the SXSW folks have scheduled Doug’s talk in the Climate Change track — clearly the awareness is rising that sequestering carbon via regenerative farming is a topic whose audience goes far beyond fans of one plant, crucial though it is.

Here’s how Doug puts it in AMERICAN HEMP FARMER: "A growing body of research suggests that each cubic inch of topsoil we restore of the world’s farmland sequesters up to three billion tons of carbon annually. And hemp’s substantial taproots are absolutely stunning at creating the conditions that allow for the building of topsoil. We’re all wise to root for an industry that helps with climate stabilization. If the regenerative farming mode catches on, farmers might even sequester sufficient carbon to buy us humans a crucial century to get our underlying infrastructural cards in order—the goal being to thrive, rather than panic, as we glide into the post-petroleum future.” Building soil is one of my key tasks in this life. And recovery happens.”
