Doug’s Essay In the New York Times Magazine

Never one to let a Biblical Hailstorm go un-tax-deducted, my essay about the (as of publication time) latest Climate Change-induced carnage on the Funky Butte Ranch appeared in the New York Times Magazine. Meanwhile, Farewell, My Subaru is continuing to fuel the worldwide theft of waste vegetable oil from behind the planet’s Chinese restaurants. Thanks to everyone for their support of the book.

Reviews of Farewell, My Subaru

“Fine is a…storyteller in the mold of…Douglas Adams. If you’re a fan of Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy-style humor — and also looking to find out how to raise your own livestock to feed your ice-cream fetish — Farewell, My Subaru may prove a vital tool.” –Washington Post

“A chuckle or a wry grin is waiting on every page, if not each paragraph. It’s the kind of humor that builds gradually, that sneaks up on you with such stealth that you hardly even realize what a good time you’re having until it’s all over. By the end of Farewell, My Subaru you can think of nothing that would seem like more fun than hanging out at Fine’s ranch, vainly striving to keep his goats from eating the rose bushes. Think James Herriot’s All Creatures Great and Small — updated as appropriate for the iPod generation.” –Salon

“Fine is an eco-hero for our time.” –Miami Herald

“The details of Doug Fine’s experiment in green living are great fun…what we are built for. It’ll make you want to move!” –Bill McKibben, author of Deep Economy: The Wealth of Communities and the Durable Future

“He is Bryson funny.” –Santa Cruz Sentinel

“This is Green Acres for the smart set–– a witty and educational look at sustainable living. Buy it, read it, compost it.” -–AJ Jacobs, author of The Year of Living Biblically

“Fine survives drought, biblical floods, and UN-hating [ranchers] as he gradually becomes ’solarized’…along the way readers will root for this dry sharp wit and his rosy green dream. Fine’s funny struggle to become a better world citizen will entertain both the eco-aware, and those who doze peacefully in their home’s formaldehyde fumes.” –-Bookpage

“NPR contributor Fine’s…voice is gentle, his humor sharp, his message clear. Farewell, My Subaru…is a book that everyone needs to read. –January Magazine

“Give a man a job and a 401(k) plan, and he’ll face a possible layoff and an insecure retirement. Give a man a chicken, a goat, a garden and an apple tree, and he’ll have a full belly and a happy heart.” –Albuquerque Journal

Dear Doug,

Hope that the river crossing has not become impassable during this unusually rainy June. I wanted to mention that there’s a biodiesel resource near Las Cruces. RIO VALLEY BIOFUELS — 575-882-5199
Farewell, My Subaru was great and I hope to hear more about a video documentary in the near future.

I loved your book and passed it on mother-in-law in Montana. It is being passed along so much that I’m not sure I will ever see it again. Many of the people in Montana did the same thing as you many years ago. They are remembering their learning curve as they read about your adventure. Thank you!

Just finished reading your book and jumped onto the nearest computer so I could find this website. What you did is amazing and very inspiring. I went from being a simple environmental activist to being a green and local living activist. Looking forward to what you decide to do next, even though it seems you have all the bases covered for the life you want to lead, so looking more forward to seeing how things turn out a decade down the road.

I checked your book out from the library, but my husband started reading it before I got a chance. After reading a bit he made promise one thing before I could read it, “NO GOATS.” It was worth it, but he didn’t say anything about chicks.
