This is my life. Milking goats one day, chatting with Jay Leno the next. When I come home, the goats, they aren’t impressed. But they do give enough milk to erase my cheese, yogurt and milkshake carbon miles (and grocery bill).
So much has happened since Farewell, My Subaru caught the producer’s eye at the Tonight Show. What I’m most grateful for is the exposure to a demographic that might not yet be, ya know, wearing Birkenstocks. In particular, the response I’ve gotten from military families has finally convinced me that sustainability is not a fad. It is no longer even a political issue. It’s both a matter of survival for the species and a route to economic reemergence.
goats are not only infinitely useful but adorable and no end of fun! i had two when i lived in the sacramentoes s.e. new mexico, and always took them along in the back seat of the chevy, they are dreadfully social and cant stand being alone and will chew your ear off with all their chatter and stand on top of the stove and eat your porridge in the morning.

Doug,
Great book! My daughter gave it to me to read. She and her husband and also my son live off the grid. I’m the last hold out, but I do most everything else with my environment in mind.
You’ve influenced a lot of people and you should be proud!
Doug…Great website…loved your interview on the the Tonight Show!! Sounds like you are enjoying life!!
Nicole
Doug, you are an awesome story! I have ordered your book and look forward to reading it. I have just found your site and will visit often.
Dude
Great book! When I saw you wrote another one, I rushed out and reserved that one at the library! I have been reading more and more of this type of book. My son is taking less showers (save water for the future and for those that don’t have it NOW) and I’m trying to buy tomatoes at the farm in the next town, vs. the supermarket. If one little idea is planted, more will come.
