My parents had a farm--cows, sheep (no goats), horses, children--and feared going broke, but they spoke of it in later years as though they had abandoned Paradise. I wish they had lived to read your book. Now I have a tree farm (forestry land), and am glad to let nature do its thing (grow trees for lumber very slowly).
